These stories are based on taped interviews conducted with surviving Girmitiyas across different parts of Fiji, including Labasa. As the late Professor Brij Lal reflected, the interviews were informal, with no structured set of questions. The aim was to record the memories of elderly individuals—memories often fragmented by time, but rich in emotional and historical depth.

Dr Lal, who assisted in some of these interviews, noted that the recordings were transcribed by unknown individuals, and the original tapes have since been lost. This makes it difficult to verify the full accuracy of each transcription. Still, the stories offer compelling insight into the harsh realities of the indenture experience. While they may not represent the full spectrum of voices or experiences, they are invaluable in preserving the legacy and resilience of the Girmitiyas.

References:

Ahmed Ali, Girmit – The Indenture Experience in Fiji. View via National Library of Australia Catalogue

Brij V.
